You have 500 hours on vanilla Minecraft. You know the Nether by heart, the dragon no longer scares you, and your latest automatic farm has been running for three weeks without you touching it. The base game has nothing left to offer you. Except modded Minecraft is another game. ATM10 alone contains 500 mods and hundreds of hours of progression. Here are the 6 modpacks that truly deserve your time in 2026.

Key takeaways

  • ATM10 is the most popular modpack of 2026 with more than 21 million downloads. It is the default choice if you want to try everything.
  • RLCraft remains the most downloaded modpack of all time (29M+), but it runs on Minecraft 1.12.2. That is intentional: the pack is considered finished.
  • The RAM required ranges from 6 GB (Better MC) to 12 GB (ATM10, DeceasedCraft). Check before installing.
  • All these packs are free on CurseForge or Modrinth. Only Minecraft Java Edition is paid.

1. All The Mods 10 (ATM10)

If you only install one modpack in 2026, this is the one. ATM10 brings together about 500 mods covering tech (Mekanism, Applied Energistics 2, Thermal Series), magic (Ars Nouveau, Occultism), exploration (Biomes O' Plenty, When Dungeons Arise, Twilight Forest), automation (Create) and decoration (Chipped, Supplementaries). All of it is linked by an FTB quest system that guides progression without forcing it.

What makes ATM10 strong is the endgame. The All The Mods series is known for its final goal: the ATM Star, an item that requires mastering almost every branch of the pack to be crafted. It is a goal that can take 200 to 400 hours to reach. We have seen players spend six months on it, playing every evening.

ATM10 runs on NeoForge in 1.21.1 and receives regular updates (the latest dates from August 2026). The ATM team has already launched ATM11 in alpha for Minecraft 26.x, but in September 2026, ATM10 remains the stable pack to use for a server. ATM11 is too unstable for a world you want to keep.

Recommended server config: 10 to 12 GB of RAM minimum, high-frequency CPU (single-thread), NVMe SSD. With 5+ players, plan for 12 GB. Server startup takes 3 to 5 minutes because of the number of mods.

Best for: players who want a bit of everything and like long-term goals. Not recommended for modding beginners: the amount of content is overwhelming without the quests to guide you.

2. Prominence II: Hasturian Era

Prominence II is the best RPG modpack of 2026 and that is not a title given lightly. With more than 12 million downloads, the pack turns Minecraft into a complete role-playing game: voiced NPCs, narrative quest system, talent tree, cinematic boss fights, customizable equipment with sets and rarities.

The pack stands apart from usual Minecraft RPGs through the quality of its writing. We are not talking about "go kill 10 zombies and come back to me". The quests tell a story in the Kingdom of Vaaz, with branching paths, choices that affect what follows, and bosses whose mechanics recall MMO raids more than Minecraft fights. The Wither looks like a mini-game next to Prominence II's final boss.

Prominence II runs on Fabric in 1.20.1. It is one of the rare big modpacks to use Fabric rather than Forge, which gives it a performance advantage. The pack is lighter than ATM10 while offering a far more structured experience.

Recommended server config: 6 to 8 GB of RAM. Fabric is lighter than Forge/NeoForge, which reduces the requirements.

Best for: players who want a clear direction, a story to follow, and demanding boss fights. The best choice for a group of friends who like dungeons and cooperation.

3. DeceasedCraft

DeceasedCraft is the surprise modpack of 2025-2026. With 9.2 million downloads and a version 6.0 in development, it turns Minecraft into an open-world zombie survival game inspired by Project Zomboid and 7 Days to Die. Procedurally generated modern cities, more than 100 weapons (melee and firearms), a system of infection, temperature, seasons, and thirst.

What you do not see in other zombie modpacks: the cities of DeceasedCraft are partly hand-built by creator _C70_. Residential zones, downtowns, industrial warehouses, each neighborhood has its own identity and its own loot. Loot is adapted to the type of building: you find weapons in police stations, food in supermarkets, electronic components in tech stores. It is a level of detail you do not expect to find in a Minecraft modpack.

The pack also includes a fluid parkour system for combat, a skill tree that uses XP, and localized damage by body part. The high-level zones (the radioactive Wasteland) contain the best equipment but demand serious preparation.

Recommended server config: 8 to 12 GB of RAM. The generated cities are memory-hungry. Forge 1.20.1.

Best for: fans of hardcore survival, zombies, and games like Project Zomboid or 7 Days to Die. A modpack that often appeals to players who do not usually play Minecraft.

4. RLCraft

RLCraft is not the most recent modpack in this list. It runs on Minecraft 1.12.2, the stable version has been 2.9.3 since 2023, and the pack no longer evolves. Yet with more than 29 million downloads, it is the most downloaded Minecraft modpack of all time, and it still attracts thousands of new players every month.

The reason is simple: RLCraft is the Dark Souls of Minecraft. The first night, you die. The second too. And probably the third. The pack adds thirst, temperature, broken limbs, overpowered mobs from spawn, dragons that attack on the surface, and a difficulty that forgives no mistake. There is no bed that works normally. There is no natural regeneration. Tools break at the wrong time. Everything is designed to kill you.

What makes RLCraft addictive despite the frustration is the skill-based progression system. Every action (mining, fighting, running, swimming) raises a skill that unlocks abilities. After 20 hours of suffering, your character starts to become competent. After 50 hours, you are finally able to survive a night without dying. This progression curve is unique and incredibly satisfying.

Recommended server config: 6 to 8 GB of RAM. Minecraft 1.12.2 is much less demanding than recent versions.

Best for: players who find vanilla Minecraft too easy and want a real challenge. Not for beginners or for players who get frustrated easily.

5. Better MC (BMC5)

Better MC is the modpack that answers the question "I want an improved Minecraft without it becoming another game". About 150 mods that add biomes, structures, dungeons, mobs, new ores and quality of life improvements, all while keeping the spirit of the vanilla game.

You will not build a nuclear reactor in Better MC. You will not cast spells or program computers in redstone. You will explore a considerably enriched vanilla world: villages with more variety, underground dungeons worth the detour, optional bosses, and a slightly increased difficulty that gives survival a little more tension without becoming punishing.

Better MC is the most recommended modpack for players who have never touched modding. The experience is immediately recognizable as Minecraft, just better. There is no learning curve, no wiki to consult constantly, no incomprehensible crafting system. You play Minecraft, but every corner of the world has something new to offer.

Recommended server config: 4 to 6 GB of RAM. It is the lightest pack in this list.

Best for: modding beginners, vanilla players who want more content without complexity, and community servers that welcome players of varied levels.

6. Cobbleverse

Cobbleverse is the most complete Cobblemon modpack in 2026, with more than 5 million downloads. It includes all 1,025 Pokémon, the 93 Mega Evolutions, a Gym and badge system, unique structures, custom music and optimized shaders. It is the most polished Pokémon in Minecraft experience currently available.

The creatures are modeled in Minecraft's block style, not in jarring high resolution. They spawn naturally in the appropriate biomes: water Pokémon in rivers, fire Pokémon in the Nether, grass Pokémon on the plains. The capture, battle, raising, evolution and breeding system is complete. Apricorns grow on trees that already exist. Pokémon Centers generate in villages. Everything fits into the vanilla world without breaking it.

Cobbleverse runs on Fabric in 1.21.1 and receives frequent updates. For a lighter installation without the community additions (gyms, music, structures), the official Cobblemon modpack by CobbledStudios (3.7M downloads) offers a minimal base.

Recommended server config: 6 to 8 GB of RAM. Pokémon entities add load, especially in high-density biomes.

Best for: Pokémon fans, community servers that want a unifying theme, and players looking for a reason to explore endlessly.

How to install a modpack on a server

The procedure depends on your host, but the principle is the same everywhere.

  • At a host with modpack support: most Minecraft server hosts offer one-click installation from their panel. Select the modpack in the list, click, wait 2 to 5 minutes. The server is configured automatically with the right loader and the right files.
  • Manual installation: download the modpack's "Server Pack" on CurseForge (a file separate from the client pack), upload it to your server via FTP/SFTP, unzip it, and launch the server. The Server Pack contains only the server-side mods and configuration files.
  • Client side: install the modpack through a compatible launcher (CurseForge App, Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, ATLauncher). The client version and server version must match exactly, otherwise players will not be able to connect.

A common trap: adding or removing mods compared with the official pack. Modpack creators spend months balancing content, recipes and compatibility. Adding a mod "because it looks cool" can break recipes, cause crashes, or unbalance progression. If you want to modify the pack, do it on a test server before applying it to your main server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do modpacks work on Minecraft Bedrock?

No. The modpacks listed here are exclusive to Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock uses a different add-on and behavior pack system, with far more limited capabilities. There is no Bedrock equivalent of ATM10, RLCraft or Prominence II.

Can you mix Fabric and Forge players on the same server?

No. All players must use the same loader as the server. An ATM10 server (NeoForge) only accepts NeoForge clients with the same pack. A Prominence II server (Fabric) only accepts Fabric clients. That is why the client version must match the server version exactly.

How much RAM should I allocate on the client side?

For light packs (Better MC, Cobbleverse): 4 to 6 GB. For medium packs (RLCraft, Prominence II): 6 to 8 GB. For heavy packs (ATM10, DeceasedCraft): 8 to 12 GB. Allocate memory in your launcher settings. Insufficient allocation causes crashes and severe lag.

Will my world stay compatible if the modpack is updated?

In most cases, yes. Minor updates of a modpack (5.10.16 to 5.10.17) are designed to be compatible with existing worlds. Major updates (v5 to v6) can break compatibility. Always make a full backup before updating, and read the release notes to check for migration warnings.

Where can I download modpacks safely?

Only on CurseForge and Modrinth. Avoid third-party sites that offer "repacks" or modified versions. Fake Minecraft modpack sites are an active infostealer vector in 2026. If a site asks you to fill out a survey or download a "special launcher" before accessing the pack, close the page.

Is ATM11 ready for a server?

No. ATM11 came out in alpha on July 14, 2026 for Minecraft 26.x (NeoForge). It already totals more than 600,000 downloads, but it is an alpha: frequent updates with breaking changes, risk of world resets, and an unstable mod list. For a server with players whose progress matters, stay on ATM10 and wait for ATM11 to leave alpha.
